Glitter Ornaments

I think that I may seriously need a glitter intervention. I can't help it! These glittered ornaments are so ridiculously simple to make that I can't seem to stop! I made nearly two dozen of them today before I ran out of blank ornaments, and now I'm dying to get back to the craft store to get more supplies. I've seen this idea floating all over Pinterest in various forms, but I think it can originally be traced back to Everyday Cricut way back in 2009.

What you need: clear glass ornaments, glitter (I prefer the look of fine glitter, but regular glitter works just as well) and clear floor wax. Yep, floor wax. I used Pledge with Future Shine from my local grocery store.

The process is super easy - pop the hanger cap off the top of the ornament, squirt a little floor wax inside the ornament and swirl it around to coat the inside. Pour the excess back into the bottle and let the ornament sit upside down for a minute until it's no longer dripping (I put mine into an egg carton to drain for about 2 minutes). Using a funnel or rolled up piece of paper, pour the glitter into the ornament and shake until the entire surface is covered. You can even pour the extra glitter right back into the bottle too. Replace the hanger cap and you're all done - easy peasy!

 Seriously. Cannot. Stop. Glittering. Things.

*******************************************************************************************************************

I have never, ever, ever in my life cooked an egg dish that didn't at least partially stick to the bottom of the pan. Ever. I cook a tremendous amount of eggs since they are my five-year-old's favorite food, so that means I've had more than my fair share of experiences with stuck-on egg messes. It was always such a chore to cook eggs every time he wanted them and an even bigger chore to clean up the dirty pan afterwards. Until now!

When the Calphalon Unison Omelet Pan came into my life, the entire way I look at cooking was completely revolutionized! The nonstick slide release surface of the pan allows delicate dishes to perfectly slide right out of the pan without leaving a single crumb behind. Clean and easy, every time! The new Your Set by Calphalon allows you to pick and choose between pans from two of Calphalon's premium lines of cookware - Unison Nonstick and AccuCore Stainless Steel - and make your own cookware set that is customized to fit your lifestyle. I love that!

Come visit me (and my big boys!) over at Relish.com where we're sharing the recipe and video tutorial for one of our newest egg dishes - Bacon, Potato and Spinach Frittata!

Consumer Crafts Haul Video & Super Cyber Monday Sale!

I recently received a gift card from Consumer Crafts along with the challenge of spending $50 on their site and making a video to show off my goodies to you guy. I say "challenge" because it is nearly impossible to decide what to spend your money on at Consumer Crafts!  They have every crafting supply you can possibly imagine, and the prices are the best that I've ever seen. Seriously. I can't believe that I hadn't been shopping at Consumer Crafts before this challenge, but you can bet that I will be from now on!

My $50 went a really long way, and my box was jam packed with craft supplies. It felt like Christmas when I started digging into that package! Here's what I got:

Wire snowflake bead forms (enough to make 21 beaded snowflake ornaments) and lots and lots of beads!  My boys are going to be making these for holiday gifts for their friends and family this year, and I can't wait to see how they turn out!

Felties Santa kit, Aleene's True Snow, lots of glitter, star shaped push pins, a black bib necklace base, two grey ruffle flowers, and 2 yards of Bling on a Roll.

...and two more Felties kits that were already in progress by the time I could grab my camera! Each kit makes 4-6 ornaments and assembles easily with nothing but glue.

These guys think that the Felties kits are pretty much the coolest thing ever, so I'll be stocking up on lots more of these in my next Consumer Crafts order.

Speaking of my next order...

Yep, that's right! Consumer Crafts is offering 30% off sitewide PLUS free shipping for Cyber Monday! This deal is good for Monday, November 26th only, but there are a ton of other great doorbusters available all weekend while supplies last. Faux Snow Paint

In our area of California we don't usually get snow in winter, so snow themed crafts are always a big hit with my boys. This snow paint activity is super simple to create and is guaranteed to keep the kiddos occupied for a long time!

To create snow paint, mix together white school glue and foam shaving cream. I found that a ratio of 1/2 cup glue to 3/4 cup of shaving cream worked well.

We used light blue construction paper and crayons to draw some pictures that we thought would look good with a little extra snow and texture.

Apply the paint to the paper with a large brush, and use a dabbing motion to build up layers of paint for additional texture.

The results dry lightly puffy from the shaving cream and shiny from the glue. It looks so pretty and icy!

DIY Washi Tape Monogram Ornaments

Each year my three boys and I decorate a special Christmas tree for their playroom that is covered entirely in homemade ornaments. This year they wanted to use washi tape (my favorite crafting supply!) to create personalized monogram ornaments, and I was happy to oblige.

I started by cutting some initials out of a recycled manilla file folder. I used my Silhouette to make quick work of it, but you could easily cut these out with an Xacto knife as well.

Cover the front of your initial with pieces of tape - we used a simple stripe pattern for our ornaments, but I think a patchwork of washi tape would also look really lovely.

Turn your letter over and trim off the excess tape using an Xacto knife.

Easy peasy! You could choose to tape the back side as well at this point, but I left ours blank so that we can record our holiday wishlists and the year on it.

Since I'm a firm believer that glitter, Mod Podge and holiday crafting should go hand-in-hand, I finished my ornaments with a coat of glittery Dimensional Magic which also helps to seal and protect the piece.

Use an awl or any sharp tool that you can get your hands on to punch a small hole or two at the top, add some baker's twine for hanging, and you're all set!

Glitter Deer Silhouette Canvas

I'm changing up our holiday decorating theme this year, and instead of focusing on lots of bright colors and felt ornaments, I'm steering myself towards all things metallic and glittery (with a nature themed twist!). I've made a bunch of gilded gold and silver feathers that are going to look awesome on our Christmas tree, and I figured that I should probably make a few more metallic and sparkly decorations to help tie them together.

I started by spray painting a bunch of large pinecones metallic gold and silver. I have to wait until we break out the tubs with the rest of the holiday decorations to determine what I'm actually going to do with them, so for now they're hanging out on every shelf, mantle and ledge space that I have available.

I saw this glittery deer head silhouette over at Under the Table and Dreaming, and I was inspired to create my own.

I started with a pre-painted black canvas and a vinyl deer silhouette that I cut with my Silhouette (you could easily cut this by hand with an Xacto blade as well). I chose to use an image of a full bodied deer even though I know that deer heads seem to be the most popular these days. Personally, I find just the heads to be kind of creepy, even in glitter form.

The tutorial I referenced used glue on cardstock to make their sparkly deer, but every time I've ever tried to apply a nice, smooth, even layer of glitter to a surface using glue it's always been a bumpy and flaky disaster. I opted to adhere my glitter to the sticky side of the vinyl instead, just to be on the safe side. Make sure that the image is reversed since the back side will eventually become the front.

Spray the front/top side of the vinyl with spray adhesive and allow it to become tacky. Carefully peel the vinyl off of the backing and glue it to the center of the canvas. Pour on the glitter and tap off the excess. Finish with a coat or two of Mod Podge Super Gloss (or any acrylic sealer) to set the glitter and keep it from coming off.

Easy peasy! Honestly though, I'm a bit concerned about this metallic and glittery holiday idea...I'm starting to look at everything in the house and wonder what might look better coated in gold spray paint and sparkles!
