Sidewalk Chalk Paint

I know I've already mentioned it a few times, but I just had to revisit one of our favorite (and inexpensive!) outdoor Summer activities - homemade sidewalk chalk painting! It is SO much fun that I couldn't resist bringing it up one more time!

The recipe we usually follow calls for a 1:1 ratio of cornstarch and water, but today we used a bit more water (closer to a 2:1 ratio) and found that we liked it even better. We were able to paint longer brushstrokes without needing to reload the paintbrush, which is always great for the younger kids. Food coloring is used to add the color, but you should note that the colors will dry much lighter on the sidewalk than they appear in the paint tin.

Painting their hands and feet and making hand/footprints was a big hit today. The paint washes off extremely easily with water, and we didn't run into any problems with the food coloring staining skin or concrete.

Since the entire batch of paint only costs about $.25 to make, I never have to worry about them ruining expensive paints when it comes time to experiment with color mixing (Sutton's specialty!).

You can't have sidewalk chalk without making hopscotch!

Hope you're having a fun weekend too!

Pinterest Anyone?

I've been totally addicted to Pinterest this week after finally getting my hands on an invite (thanks Amanda!) and finding some time to start sorting through all of the links in my bookmarks. I absolutely {LOVE} being able to organize my bookmarks (especially all of my "to-make-and-do" links!) by photo so I can find what I'm looking for at a quick glance. Ah-mazing!

So, are any of you on Pinterest too? I'd love to see what y'all are pinning! I still have invites to send (right now Pinterest registration is via invite only), so if you're looking for one just shoot me an email at momscraftyspace[at]yahoo[dot]com! But you've been warned, it's addictive! :)

Quickie: Memorial Day Garland

(It was raining, so the pictures are a little dark - sorry! Also, feel free to completely ignore the mantlescape...it's just a collection of stuff I've set up there to get out of the baby's reach over the past week LOL!)
Sutton and I whipped up this cute little garland in about five minutes yesterday. He was busying himself with punching circles from colored paper, so I suggested we throw some patriotic patterns into the mix and create a decoration for the upcoming holiday weekend. We punched about 60 circles in two different sizes, and then I quickly sewed them into a garland on my sewing machine. Couldn't be easier!
It gets bonus points since we'll be able to reuse it for 4th of July too!

Oops!

I just accidentally deleted about half of the buttons off of my "link parties" page...if yours was one of them, I'm so sorry! I'm working on getting it all reorganized and put back together! Thanks for your patience!

Marshmallow Shooters

A couple of weeks ago we came across a booth selling marshmallow guns at the Strawberry Festival. The boys were instantly smitten, but at $7 each Mitch said no way - if there's a way to make it ourselves for less, we're all over it! One quick trip to Home Depot and $7 later, and we had enough supplies to make marshmallow shooters to supply the entire neighborhood!

I foresee a marshmallow battle in the making!

The construction is simple and straightforward. No directions here, but you can get the jist of it by looking at the picture. It's all made from 1/2" PVC pipe and connecters, with a quick blast of spray paint to pretty it up (and make sure everyone can keep track of which gun is theirs!)!

They're just as simple to use too! Just load a mini marshmallow into the mouthpiece...

...and give it a quick puff of air! Easy peasy! (Don't you just love how they color coordinated their guns to their swim trunks LOL!)

Let the battle begin! (For the record, Mitch can get some serious power behind his marshmallows!)

It's tough to shoot your marshmallows when you can't stop laughing!

SO. Much. Fun!

Lemon Bread {Recipe}

We've been on the hunt for a great lemon bread recipe (since my hubby spends far too much $ at Starbucks trying to quell his lemon bread cravings), and I think that after trying way too many recipes and adding in some tweaks and alterations we've finally got it! This one is quick and easy enough that you could even have the kids whip it up to make a surprise treat for Dad!

Ingredients

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine, softened
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons grated lemon peel
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup milk

GLAZE:
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup confectioners' sugar

Directions

In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, lemon juice and peel, and vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder and salt; stir into creamed mixture alternately with milk. Pour into a greased loaf pan (or alternately into a muffin tin - makes 12 muffins). Bake at 350 degrees F for 45 minutes or until bread tests done (approx 20 minutes for muffins). Combine glaze ingredients. Remove bread from pan; immediately drizzle with glaze. {I like to double the glaze, poke holes in the top of the bread, add half the glaze while the bread is hot from the oven and then add the other half after it has cooled a bit}

I use my Slice Solutions loaf pan for perfectly pretty and smooth slices. They store nicely between sheets of waxed paper so that we can just grab one on the go in the mornings.

Yum, indeed!

Fun Paint Round-Up

I recently noticed on Pintrest that some of our old posts on fun paint ideas have been pinned a bunch of times, so I thought I'd bring them back to the forefront for this gorgeous sunny weekend - there's truly nothing like painting outside to inspire the little ones!

Congratulations to the winner, Dragonfly Treasure, who said "I also liked Arcady Artisan Fragrances on Facebook ♥." I'll be sending you an email soon!
My dear friend Jody recently opened up shop on Etsy, and I just had to take a minute to share her new shop, Arcady Artisan Fragrances, for Fun Finds Friday! I have been wearing her Persephone fragrance all week, and it's amazing! It immediately triggers my olfactory memory, and I'm transported in time to one of my favorite boutiques that I used to frequent when I was a teenager. There's something so reminiscent about it that I catch myself smelling my wrists over and over again throughout the day...I really can't get enough of it!

I {love} lavender! This is totally going to be my next purchase! In fact, if you click on that link and this one has already been purchased, it was probably me. I'm sure Jody will restock it ;)

This Crystal Perfume Bottle Pendant is sooo pretty, and it comes filled with your choice of fragrances. One of your options is Rock Star, a limited edition scent that's sure to be sexy!

Come on now...you know you want to know what Twilight smells like!
("Delicious notes of honey, lilac and red apple which dry to a sweet floral and woody base of osmanthus and sandalwood," according to this fun fragrance!)

Bath salts in luxurious scents such as Spiced Chocolate, Cherry Milkshake and Sweet Jasmine round out the collection. These sound divine!

Now, for the most fun part of all...

Jody is giving away a mini sized bottle of Invincible perfume to one of my readers! Invincible is part of the Literati collection (along with Persephone, Baudelaire, Verte and Ma Boheme), and is described as "breezing into being with a fresh invigorating impression of spring-time beaches; with pure, direct notes of sea salt, peach and sandalwood, which describe sand dunes and clean ocean air."

Baby Ribbon Tag Blanket {Tutorial}

Time for another fun and easy baby shower gift! When I was pregnant with Sawyer (almost 6 years ago!), ribbon blankets were all the rage, and though I wasn't really sure they'd actually be a big hit with my unborn baby, I decided to whip up a couple of them on my new sewing machine. Honestly, that's when my insane crafting craze began, so I have a sentimental soft spot in my heart for these cute little blankies. Naturally I had to make one for the baby shower I went to this past weekend!

Start by selecting two fabrics (I chose 100% cotton for the front and a soft chenille for the back) and some coordinating ribbon. Cut the fabric into two 14" squares. You should pre-wash your fabrics to avoid any uneven shrinkage once your blanket is assembled. You can also iron your fabrics at this point, but since we'll be ironing them later on I usually skip it.

Cut your ribbon into 5" pieces (you can cut them as short as 3", but I like mine to be a little longer in the end - just personal preference!). I used 20 ribbons - 5 on each side of the blanket. Make sure you have a wide variety of ribbons! I like to use grosgrain, satin, embroidered, sheer, etc...it's all about the tactile experience for the baby, so the more textures you have the better!

Play around with how you'd like your ribbons laid out. I actually ended up changing mine around a few more times before I finally settled on a design. There's really no right or wrong answer, but I find that putting the sturdier ribbons (usually the thicker/wider grosgrain ones) at the corners seems to work best.

Fold your ribbons in half and pin them in place. They should be on the inside of your cut square with the edges lined up with the edges of the fabric. At this point it's advisable to sew the ribbons in place by quickly stitching around the perimiter of the fabric, but since I'm always in a hurry I usually just keep the pins in for the next step (watch your fingers if you do it my way!).

Sandwich your two blanket squares together, right sides facing in. If you're in a hurry like me and didn't sew your ribbons down in the last step, make sure that your pins are far enough away from the edges that they won't get caught in the seam you're about to sew! I use a 1/4" seam allowance, so I like to keep my pins about 1" in from the edges.

Pin the fabrics together (I realize that most people put their pins in the other direction...not sure why I do mine this way. Just habit I guess! Pin it however you like, so long as it's pinned!) and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening at the bottom for turning the fabric right side out. Again, if you didn't sew your ribbons down in the last step, be extra careful when you turn your fabric right side out since there are about 20 extra pins inside there to remove!

Voila! Now it's time to iron your blankie! Place the last ribbons (there should be a couple of un-sewn ribbons where you left the opening) in place and top stitch around the entire blanket.

I like to use a decorative top stitch, though it's kind of hard to see in this picture!

All done! Easy peasy (and cute to  boot!)!

Turns out the ribbon blakets were a huge hit in my house! Here is Simon at 5 months with the blanket I made six years ago for Sawyer - it's held up wonderfully! He loves to play with the ribbons, and they're fantastic for teethers to gnaw on! Ours are never far from reach :)

Hope your littles ones love them too!
